It appears as if THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Victoria is about to rejoin the Genoa City singles market: In a surprise turn of events out of the soap’s casting department, Richard Burgi announced in an Instagram story that he has wrapped up his time playing media mogul Ashland on Y&R.
“I want to say thank you to all of you wonderful folks, who have been so kind and generous and supportive with your words,” Burgi began his video message to his fans before dropping his bombshell. “I’m moving on from the show. I’ve had a great year on Y&R, and just thoroughly enjoyed the great cast and crew. Such wonderful people.”
The veteran actor joined the cast of Y&R last March in the recurring role of Ashland Locke, a ruthless businessman who ended up clashing with both the Abbott and Newman families. At the time of his debut, Ashland was married to Kyle’s former fling, Tara, and it was soon revealed that the couple’s young son, Harrison, had actually been fathered by Kyle. While Burgi’s appearance on Y&R was supposed to be a limited run, he stuck around as his storyline was expanded to include a romance — complete with a grand Tuscan wedding — with Victoria.
While Burgi is recognized by most television viewers for his role as Karl on primetime sudser DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, he has quite a few daytime roles under his belt. His soap credits include ANOTHER WORLD’s Chad, ONE LIFE TO LIVE’s Randy, AS THE WORLD TURNS’ Glenn, DAYS OF OUR LIVES’ Philip, and — most recently — GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Paul Hornsby, which he played from 2014-’16.
In his video message, Burgi gave no further information as to why he was leaving the soap or when his final airdate would be. “I wish you all a good start to 2022,” he concluded. “Luck, health, love, joy. God bless.”
UPDATE 1/11/21: Y&R has now announced that the role of Ashland Locke is being recast with daytime star Robert Newman.
