Vincent Irizarry Is Recovering From Emergency Surgery

On March 11, soap veteran Vincent Irizarry needed to have emergency surgery, and we are so glad to report that he is recovering nicely! The actor (who has had roles on a slew of soaps, including GUIDING LIGHT’s Nick and Lujack, ALL MY CHILDREN’s David, DAYS OF OUR LIVES’ Deimos, and THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ David) needed to have a neurological procedure done to drain fluid that had been building up in his brain over the last three months. As previously reported, Irizarry had tried to diffuse an altercation between a man and his wife when he was struck and fell to the ground, suffering a concussion.

Irizarry’s girlfriend, Yvonne Glisson, kept the actor’s fans updated with posts on her social media pages, first asking for prayers before he went in for the operation, and then later sharing that the procedure was a success. “Overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and concern we have received concerning Vincent’s emergency surgery,” Glisson wrote later that evening, sharing a photo of Irizarry in his hospital bed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, California. “Thank you all who have reached out, commented, reposted, or shared your thoughts and prayers.”

Excess fluid on the brain is a condition called hydrocephalus. Patients with hydrocephalus like Irizarry needs to have the excess brain fluid removed to relieve the pressure on the brain, otherwise, the pressure will cause brain damage. Hydrocephalus is typically treated either through shunt surgery, where the fluid will then flow to another part of the body, or by neuroendoscopy, where the neurologist makes a hole in the floor of the brain, allowing the build-up of fluid to drain out and be absorbed by the body.

While Glisson didn’t specify which type of procedure Irizarry had done, she did share that his surgeon was successful with the operation — despite finding “a bit more” fluid than was expected. “But he has been watched and tested all day and thankfully, fluid has not increased again,” she wrote. “They will keep him there and be watching for that or any complications and observing his condition before sending him home.”

Even though he had to stay in the hospital for a short while, Irizarry was in good spirits. “Otherwise, Vincent has been awake all day,” Glisson continued, adding that he was “talking, eating, and being his ever-charming self even with his head bandaged and tubes coming out all over him!

“On behalf of Vincent, thank you for all the love and well-wishes,” Irizarry’s partner concluded her post. “It is not overlooked or taken for granted. He is, as always, grateful.”

We are so glad to hear that Irizarry is on the mend!
